Why cats scratch
Scratching is normal behavior. Cats scratch to stretch, to keep their claws in shape and to leave their scent. The aim is to give that scratching a better place, not to stop it.
Where to put it
Place the scratcher right where the unwanted scratching happens, often a sofa arm, a doorway or the side of a bed. Match the angle too: upright scratchers suit cats that stretch tall, flat ones suit cats that scratch rugs.
