Choosing gear
What should a beginner buy first?
Start with one seed feeder and one shallow bath. That pair covers food and water, is easy to keep clean, and shows you who visits before you add more. If you have no yard, a window feeder is the simplest start.
Do you sell bird seed?
No, we do not sell seed. It cannot ship from overseas, so it is always bought locally. Garden centers, hardware stores and many grocery stores carry it in small bags, which is the right way to start.
Which feeder suits a small space?
A window feeder or a single hanging feeder on a bracket suits balconies and small yards. Window feeders mount on clean glass with suction cups and need no pole, hook or tree, so they work almost anywhere.
Can a feeder be squirrel-proof?
No feeder stops every squirrel, so we do not promise that. Placement helps most: a pole about ten feet from jump points, with a baffle below the feeder. Some feeders add cages or weighted perches, shown in the listing.
Setup and care
Where should I hang a feeder?
Hang it where you can see it, near cover but not inside it. A common guideline is within three feet of a window or more than thirty feet away. Our placement guide walks through height, shade and squirrels.
How often should I clean a feeder?
Clean seed feeders about every two weeks, and sooner after rain or heavy use. Hummingbird feeders need a rinse at every nectar change, and baths need fresh water every day or two.
How do I make hummingbird nectar?
Mix one part plain white sugar into four parts water, stir until it dissolves, and let it cool. Skip honey, sweeteners and red dye. Change it every few days, and more often in hot weather.
When should a bird house go up?
Put a bird house up in late winter or early spring, before nesting begins. Mount it out of direct afternoon sun, with the entrance away from the wind, and clean it out once each nesting season ends.
