Choosing and fit
Which aid should I start with?
Start with the room where daily tasks feel hardest, usually the bathroom. A grab bar by the tub or toilet and a shower seat cover the most common needs. For bending and reaching, a reacher is a small, simple first step.
How do I measure for a grab bar?
Measure the clear wall length and note the surface type first. Then find the studs with a stud finder and mark the height where a hand naturally lands. Our grab bar guide walks through each measurement with the common heights to try.
How do I measure for a shower seat?
Measure the flat floor inside the tub or tray, wall to wall. Then measure the door or tub opening and the seated height you need. Our shower seat guide explains each measurement and the different seat types.
Can I return an item I have installed?
Returns are for unused items, so installed pieces usually cannot come back. A screw-in bar that has been drilled into a wall counts as used. That is why we ask you to measure first, and to email us any fit question before you fit it.
Installation
Do I need tools?
Many pieces need no tools at all. Suction bars, seats, mats, reachers and most toilet aids are set up by hand. Screw-in grab bars need a drill, the right bit for your wall and suitable anchors or studs.
Should I hire someone to install a grab bar?
If you are unsure about drilling into tile or finding studs, yes. A local handyman can usually fit a screw-in grab bar quickly. Show them the instructions in the box and ask them to test the bar firmly once fitted.
Can a suction grab bar go on any wall?
No, suction bars need smooth, flat, non-porous tile or glass. They will not hold well on textured tile, grout lines, painted drywall or wallpaper. Check the indicator before every use and refit the bar if the seal has lifted.
Can I use a towel bar as a grab bar?
No, a towel bar is not built to be held while you move. Fit a grab bar made for the purpose, mounted as its instructions describe. Some grab bars double as towel rails, but never the other way around.
